Batoche is the site of the Battle of Batoche, which took place in 1885 during the Northwest Rebellion. It is located along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, not too far from Fish Creek. The outcome was defeat for the Metis people who were led by Louis Riel.
The settlement here was founded in 1872 and grew to about 500 people when the battle took place. Batoche was considered the de-facto capital of Louis Riel’s provisional government for the Metis. In 1923, Batoche was designated a National Historic Site, and today you can visit the Batoche National Historic Park there to learn more about this defining moment in Saskatchewan’s history. |
