This archipelago is a home for more than 680 species of plants and some 250 bird and other animal species. It was inhabited from the times of ancient history. It is known that the 2nd millennium BC saw the coming of Illyrians. The Romans have built their luxurious vilas, salt works and a shipyard here after conquering this area in 177 BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Briuni became a part of Byzantium. In the 8th century the islands were occupied by the Franks. This was the period in which the Slavs first came to these parts.

An abbey was built on the archipelago in the 10th century by Benedictines. After the year 1331 the islands were ruled by Venice. The archipelago was deserted in the late Middle Ages due to malaria. Mezam merchant by the name of P. Kuapei Wisner drained the swampland in the course of the 19th century and turned Briuni into an exclusive Summer resort and built an underwater Water-main from Fazana. Famous bacteriologist Koch was engaged in fighting the malaria.

The most important cultural object of the archipelago are the ruins of Roman rustic vilas from the 1st century, excavations from the Byzantine period, the ruins of an Old Christian basilica from the 6lh century, towers from the 12th and the 13th century, a citadel from the 15th century and a gothic church dating from the 15lh century.

After 1947, Briuni was an exclusive summer residence of Josip Broz Tito, the president of the federative Yugoslavia. Veliki Briun, Mali Briun and Vanga were equipped with several additional exclusive objects built for this purpose. A large number of valuable objects of art by native and foreign masters are part of the inventory of these bulidings. Briuni are world-known for the meetings of politicians from all of the world and ex Yugoslavia. Briuni are now once again turned into an extremely exclusive summer resort which functions as a public enterprise. The future of this location took a sharp upturn after being proclaimed as the national memorial area by the Croatian parliament on the 1st of April 1984.
