Cakovec is a city with a population of 27,000 at an elevation of 156 m, and it is a seat of county Medimurje. It is 12 km from Varazdin area between the rivers Mura and Drava. The city gates and graveyards with a walking path around the cafes are well preserved. There are the Zrinski family graves in the Pavlinian church near the city.
The roads to Ljubljana, Lendava, Le-tenje and Kotoriba lead from here. Developed industries are building industry, wood and metal industry and printing industry. The city was founded by Dimitrije Cak in 1268, after whom the city was named. In 1466 king Ferdinand I gave the city and the whole Medimurje to Nikola Zrinski. Pe-tar Zrinski and Krsto Frankopan were executed in Novo Mesto near Wiena under the accusation of plotting against the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Both of them are very important figures in the Croatian history. The Renaissance castle Zrinski is well preserved, and today it is a museum of Medimurje.
Cakovec is a cultural and economic centre of Medimurje. The city has been expanding rapidly. The school-system and a trade-mastering are greatly developed in the city. Near the old park stand the "Park" hotel, the Olympic pool and a four-track skittle-alley. Because of its town-planning, the city is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in north Croatia. Rich hunting grounds are there. Near the city is an excursion centre Blago-vica, and a large "battery" lake HE Cakovec. The excursion locations are also in Mackovec and Vuckovec near Martin na Muri.
