In the past, I would have agreed with the other reviewers about what a great place this is. But something has happened to Garbeau's and it is no longer a place to go for dinner. Enjoy the show, they are usually good, and you can get the show without dinner. You'll have a better dinner experience at the budget priced Spaghetti Factory located in the same building. (Tip: at intermission, ladies would be well advised to run downstairs to the restrooms outside the Spaghetti Factory to avoid lengthy wait upstairs).
No point in reviewing the show. They are almost always good, and will change often. But the dinner. It was either a tragedy or a comedy, depending on perspective. We arrived at 6:25 and weren't served until 7:45. They take your plates away before the show starts at 8:00, so do the math. There are only 6 items on the menu, and after we waited 20 minutes, the server returned to inform us that the one we chose had been "coming out of the kitchen dry tonight" so was no longer being served. OK, it happens, and better that than a bad meal. But in our case this was in addition to a bad meal. When the meal finally arrived, it was abruptly dropped in front of us "banquet hall style", with no apology or explanation of the interminable wait. The steak we chose instead had a distinct "off" flavor. Neither of us were able to get past the first few bites before feeling sure that if we ate more, we'd be spending the rest of the evening in the loo. The server didn't inquire, and even if she had, the show was starting in a few minutes, and we had no time to order something different. Until we discovered lumps in them, we suspected the mashed potatoes to have come from a box. The asparagus was literally raw. Not "lightly steamed", but perfectly raw. This was once a place I would consider a dinner destination even without the show. But until and unless they work out their kitchen issues, I'd opt for the show only tickets. Based on the number of empty seats on opening weekend of a limited run production, it would seem that others have come to the same conclusion. This place used to sell out routinely, so I was surprised that I was able to reserve good seats just days before the show. Now I understand why. |
