Kosinj is a common name of the settlements around the storage lake HU Senj Krusica. They are: Donji and Gornji Kosinj, Rakovac Kosinjski, Beljak Kosinjski, Ruje, Mlakove i Bakovac. It has 1400 inhabitants and it lies at 511 meters above sea level. The roads Otocac-Jablanac and Krs-Jablanac pass through this area. The waters, which are enclosed by an 80 meters high dam, are being carried off by tunnel to Gradacac and Brlog, and from there to Jurjevo where the hydro-electric power plant Senj is situated. Kosinj is an old settlement. The local church was built in 1650.
Donji Kosinj is attractive because it is 17 km long and also includes Lipovo polje. The first printed book in Croatia was a Glagolitic breviary published in Kosinj in 1491. After the battle at Krbava the printing office was destroyed. In Gornji Kosinj there are several ruins of the old settlements, where we can find the old town of Bocaj, the birthplace of the poet Lavoslav Vukelic.
The Kosinj valley, 27 km long, is surrounded by Velebit and is one of the most significant places in the history of Croatia and one of the most beautiful valleys of Croatia and the Mediterranean. As early as the 12th century the hospice of St. Margaret and the monastery were mentioned in the village of Mlakovo. The monastery was destroyed by the Tatars and then re-built by the Paulists on the same place.
Not far from Mlakovo there is the Krusica dam, from which there is a beautiful view of the Kosinj valley. There is a church of St. Vid in the village Bakovac, where the famous missal of the prince Novak from 1368, one of the most beautiful Croatian Glagolitic manuscripts, was preserved. Today it is known that this missal was the basis for printing the Glagolitic missal from 1483.
