Krbava is a village in Lika with 160 inhabitants situated in the Krbava field, on the river of the same name. The road from Otocac to Udbina and the Plitvice lakes passes through the Krbava field, and from Krbava you can get to Gospic by a local road.
There are 2000 people living around the field and most of the locals and the area is used as a cattle-raising area, where barley and potato are also grown. Udbina is the centre, and there are many surrounding villages: Bunici, Komic, Podlapaca, Kurjak, Donji Mekinar, Vusici, Josan, Debelo Brdo and Kozjan. Krbava was first mentioned by Constantine Porfirogenet in the 10th century. The Krbava diocese was established in 1185 and its see was first in Mursinj, then in Udbi-na and finally in Modrus. This is the place where the Croats were badly defeated by the Turks in 1493.
Almost all Croatian noblemen were killed in the battle at Krbava, under the leadership of ban Derencin. This was the beginning of the fall of the Croatian kingdom. In the Krbava field you can also see a very interesting Laudonov gaj (gaj = grove), which is a protected area. In Bunic there are the remains of an old Turkish tower.
