Montredon lies in the southwest edge of Marseille, considered a suburb in many ways. It is near the Mediterranean coast, which is lined with numerous restaurants, cafés, and clubs as well as rocky inlets that are great for evening swims and day-time picnics.
One of the highlights of Montredon is the Château Pastré, a castle that is situated in a huge park. This fortress is home to the Musée de la Faïence, which has a collection of both historic and contemporary ceramics pieces.
In Montredon further out east away from the coasts, you’ll also find the Musée d’Art Contemporain, a contemporary art museum, which features a permanent collection of 1960s works by the likes of Warhol, Klein, Christo, Niki de Saint-Phalle, and Klein as well as local artists like César and Ben.
Even further out east is the famously eccentric Cité Radieuse, a 17-storey building that was designed and completed in the early 1950s by architect Le Corbusier. The colorful apartments have two levels and balconies on either side of the building with spectacular views of the sea. The top floor has a wonderful sculptural roof decoration and a pool. And the entire structure is supported by columns at the ground level.
