Part Dieu is the district running parallel to Presqu’île except on the other side of the Rhône River. Part Dieu is Lyon’s business and office district. It is also the transportation hub of Lyon. Its high-speed railway station connects with many of France and Europe’s major cities, serving up to 80,000 passengers a day and 15 million a year on average.
Part Dieu in many ways is the second city center of Lyon after Presqu’île. While this urban district features the tallest skyscraper in the region, Le Crayon, the largest shopping mall in France, and several government office buildings, it does have attractions that are more of leisure and cultural interest. Les Halles de Lyon is one of them. This is the city’s main produce market located on the left bank of the Rhône on Cours Lafayette. The market is especially busy on the weekends and holidays. You’ll find every kind of produce from caviar, to hundreds of varieties of cheese, to oysters, mushrooms, and vegetable greens. The market’s tasting room platforms are actually restaurants-in-effect whose food is as good as the finest restaurants in Lyon. You’ll get to sample oysters, snails, fresh baked bread, white Côtes du Rhône, and cheeses like St Marcellin.
There are also three museums in Part Dieu: the Centre d’Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation (Museum of the History of the Resistance and the Deportation), the Musée Urbain Tony Garnier, and the Institut Lumière. The Centre d’Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation showcases equipment, photographs, and other artifacts and items that recreate the lives of France’s resistance fighters – the French who fought against German occupation during WWII. The Musée Urbain Tony Garnier is centered around its 1920s building – a failed attempt at low-income housing. Its walls today feature giant murals of paintings depicting the works of Tony Garnier, who was an early 20th century Lyon architect. Finally, the Institut Lumière exhibits early films and contemporary movies and has archives of films, books, photos, files, and director and actor information related to old movies. The site of the museum is where the Lumière brothers first invented the cinematographic apparatus.
