Slano is a place with a population of 246 in the coastal region of Dubrovnik, situated on the Adriatic freeway. From here, the roads lead to Zavala and Ravno. The Romans knew it by the name of Zizium. It was the hometown of an old Illyrian tribe, whose ships presented a severe threat for the Roman and Greek trading ships. During the period of Dubrovnik Republic it was the seat of the Rector whose 15th Century palace is still preserved. The Franciscan church of St. Jeronim and the parish church of St. Vlaho were both built in the year of 1420.
Old Christian sarcophaguses were excavated here. The largest fair in the South of Dalmatia called "Sidz" is held here on the 2 August each year. The place has lovely beaches, a health station, several stores and inns as well as two large auto - camps. The Omuscic summer residence and the Vjetrenica cave in Zavala, the latter of which is known for its length and beauty and is considered to be the most narrow cave in the world.
During the war of independence, one of the attacks started by the complete destruction of Slano and of the nearby Ravno in the Herzegovina hinterland. The efforts of the locals and the help of the world community helped Slano to heal its wounds.
