Vrhovine is a municipality and a town in Lika with 870 inhabitants (700 meters above sea level), on the road Gospic-the Plitvice lakes. Due to the abundance of woods the timber and wood industry developed. The place is known for its long winters. It developed in 1753 when a military building was erected. There are large hunting grounds for big and small game which extend over 17000 hectares. In its front part Dolac there is a hunting lodge.
During the war in 1991/92 many things were damaged. In Vrhovine there was a big Illyrian town whose remains still exist. The assumption is that this could even be the capital of the Illyrians, Metulum. It is known for a fact that the Roman emperor Octavian August started the war against the Illyrians in 35 BC and that he was wounded in his knee right beneath the walls of Matulum. When the Illyrians realized that they would not be able to defend Matulum, they set it on fire.
