Whistler is a resort town in British Columbia located north of Squamish and 120 kilometers (75 miles) northwest of Vancouver. The fashionable Whistler Resort has been rated many times over as the number one ski resort in North America by various ski magazines in the past 15 years. Attracting high-profile international clientele, Whistler is primarily famous for its skiing but also offers an array of recreational activities that include fishing, hiking, water sports, heli-hiking, and simply sightseeing.
The pseudo-European Whistler Village nestles between Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains, and caters for every need, including those of conventioneers. There is an alpine-village at the base of the two mountains, full of restaurants, bars, and pubs. You can get to Whistler by train from North Vancouver, by bus with Maverick Coach Lines that operate from downtown Vancouver, or by car along the scenic Highway 99.
For the 2010 Winter Olympics, for which Vancouver won the bid to host, Whistler will be hosting the “Nordic events”. The alpine skiing events will take place on Whistler Mountain whereas the sliding events such as the skeleton, luge, and bobsleigh will take place on Blackcomb Mountain. |
